Commercial boron carbide is produced by reacting and fusing boric oxide and carbon, in an electric arc furnace. Boron Carbide (B4C) is one of the hardest man-made materials in the world. Its hardness is as high as 9.36 Mohs, its density is 2.52 g/cm3 and melting point is 2450℃. It possesses properties of high strength, low density, corrosion resistant, low/high temperature resistant, low thermal conductivity, high modulus of elasticity, no magnetism and high grinding efficiency. It is a high performance abrasive material and engineering ceramics material.
