ZIRCONIA POWDER

Zirconia is best known among ceramics as being both hard and fracture-tough at room temperature. Additionally, its fine (sub-micron) grain size enables excellent surface finishes and the ability to hold a sharp edge. Although it retains many properties including corrosion resistance at extremely high temperatures, zirconia does exhibit structural changes that can limit its use at high temperatures (eg above 500°C).

Zirconia is tough because it has a tetragonal structure that precipitates a stress induced phase transformation near an advancing crack tip. This expands the structure on impact and absorbs energy. At higher temperatures the structure reforms causing 3-7% dimensional expansion and loss of strength.
The properties of the tetragonal structure can be controlled by blending it with other materials to balance toughness and strength
For example, zirconia is commonly blended with a stabilizer such as Magnesia,(MgO), Calcia, (Lime, CaO) or Yttria (Y2O3) in order to facilitate transformation toughening. Instead of a fully tetragonal structure, this creates a partial cubic crystal structure during initial firing that remains metastable
Partially stabilized zirconia or PSZ with about 3.5% Magnesia (MgO) is high in toughness and strength even at elevated temperatures with a larger grain structure
Yttria stabilized zirconia is partially stabilised with about 5.4 Yttria (Y2O3). It is also known as tetragonal zirconia Polycrystal or TZP and it has the finest grain size of all the zirconia materials we offer.
These grades exhibit the highest toughness and strength at room temperature because they are nearly 100% tetragonal but this degrades between 200 and 500°C as these irreversible crystal transformations also cause dimensional change.
Suntek Material offers a full series of Partially Stabilized Zirconia powders for making of high quality structural ceramics products.
